Why did Champlain choose St. Croix Island for the French settlement?
Look at Champlain’s map of the settlement on St. Croix Island (see the one in the St. Croix Island Discovery Box). Use what you have learned about why the settlement did not work to help you to create your own settlement. Think about where a good site for your settlement would be and what you would need to have there. How would you create a settlement differently than Champlain?
Create a model of your own settlement in 1604. Create a legend like the one on Champlain’s map of the settlement at St. Croix Island and label your buildings.
On a separate sheet of paper describe why you located your settlement where you did (hint: describe why you settled on an island, on the mainland, on the coast, etc.) and describe each building – what it looked like, what its function was, and why you have included it in your settlement.
Finished already? Edit, edit, edit! Ensure your work is complete, detailed, and neat. Remember you are going to be teaching this to the rest of the class so you need to know what you are talking about. Check the rubric to make sure you have everything completed. Double check with the teacher.
